About Visionary Films

Discover the story behind Austin's leading film directing program.

Our History

Visionary Films school building

Visionary Films was founded in 2010 by renowned filmmaker and educator, Eleanor Vance. Driven by a desire to provide aspiring directors with a practical, hands-on education that mirrored the realities of the independent film industry, Eleanor established Visionary Films in the heart of Austin, Texas. Initially, the program began as a series of intensive workshops held in a small studio space downtown. The focus was clear: to nurture creative talent, develop strong technical skills, and foster a collaborative community.

Over the years, Visionary Films has grown from a modest workshop series into a comprehensive directing program. We expanded our curriculum to cover all aspects of filmmaking, from script analysis and pre-production planning to on-set direction and post-production techniques. Our faculty has grown as well, adding experienced industry professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom. Many of our instructors have worked on award-winning films, and they are passionate about sharing their experiences with the next generation of filmmakers.

In 2018, Visionary Films moved to its current location in the vibrant South Congress neighborhood. Our state-of-the-art facility includes a fully equipped sound stage, editing suites, screening room, and classrooms. We’ve invested in cutting-edge technology to ensure that our students have access to the tools they need to succeed. Located in Austin, our students are in close proximity to many independent film production companies, film festivals, and post-production facilities. This allows for significant networking opportunities and internships.

Throughout our history, Visionary Films has remained committed to its original mission: to empower aspiring filmmakers with the skills, knowledge, and network they need to launch successful careers in the film industry. Our graduates have gone on to direct feature films, documentaries, television shows, and commercials. They have won awards at prestigious film festivals and have made a significant impact on the independent film scene.

As we look to the future, Visionary Films is committed to innovation and excellence. We are constantly updating our curriculum to reflect the latest trends and technologies in the film industry. We are also expanding our outreach programs to make filmmaking education more accessible to diverse communities. We are proud of our history, and we are excited to continue shaping the future of filmmaking.
